Cremation Urns
What type of urn should I buy?
There’s no one decision that’s best for everyone, by considering the below you’ll make the best choice:
What material and style best reflects your loved one’s personality?
Where is the final resting place? Mantel shelves, niches and burial sites all have certain requirements that need to be met. Consider appropriate urn material and dimensions based on your decision.
What is your budget? Metal vase urns are the most affordable followed by fiberglass burial urns, which offer the most style options.
What size urn do I need?
This depends on how much your loved one weighed before cremation.
The general rule of thumb is that the weight in Pounds(lbs) before cremation = Cubic Inches in Ashes.
If they weighed between 225-320 pounds = XL Urns
between 60 – 225 pounds = Adult Urns
Between 30-60 pounds = Medium Urns
For sharing or small mementos = Keepsake/Mini Urns
Do I need to purchase an urn from the funeral home or crematorium?
You can purchase a cremation urn from an on-line website or from select stores, and bring it to the funeral home or crematorium.
The Federal Trade Commission Funeral Rule ensures that every American has a right to provide their own casket or urn for use by a funeral home. Specifically, the rule states that The funeral provider cannot refuse to handle a casket or urn you bought online, at a local casket store, or somewhere else or charge you a fee to do it. The funeral home cannot require you to be there when the casket or urn is delivered to them.
For more information about the FTCA Funeral Rule simply consult their website: http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0300-ftc-funeral-rule
Can I fly with a memorial urn and cremated remains?
The Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) requires that all cremation urns pass through an X-ray machine. If the container is made of metal or other material that prevents screeners from seeing clearly inside the container, it will not be allowed on the plane. The TSA recommends that consumers purchase temporary containers made of wood or plastic for transporting their loved one’s remains by plane. You are permitted to transport empty cremation urns, if the lid can be removed and the inside of the urn inspected.
Can I add engraving at a future date (after delivery)
We get this question a lot, so the short answer is yes, but the long answer is that you will need to find a local engraver in your area who would be comfortable enough with adding engraving on the urn. Since this is a service that we do not provide it would be best to research and ensure you know someone in your local area who can laser engrave a date on the urn.
There is another suggestion you can consider. You can find a company that provides UV sticker printing services locally or online, give them the text or pictures you need to print, and they will send them to you after the production is completed. UV sticker printing can be pasted on different materials such as wood, metal, glass, ceramics, etc. Of course, we can provide this service for free. Because all products are shipped from China, you need to reserve enough time and wait patiently.
How do I care of the urn/maintain the urn?
We meticulously source high quality materials for our urn collection to purchase. Each urn is constructed to stand the test of time. What this means is that the most maintenance you will have to perform over time will be the occasional wiping down of the urn with a micro fiber cloth. This of course will only be necessary if dust or finger prints collect on the outside of the material.
How do I transfer the remains to an urn?
There are several options:
- Request that the crematory or funeral home perform this task. If either of these facilities transfer the ashes the bag is usually closed with an official seal.
- Transfer the ashes in the provided plastic bag yourself. In some instances, the urn will have a large enough opening that the plastic bag of ashes can be transfer directly without opening. Our ceramic urns have the largest opening allowing the entire bag to slide inside without opening.
- Transfer the ashes by pouring them into the selected urn.
Do I have to seal a cremation Urn?
If you’re burying your loved one it’s recommended that the unopened crematory plastic bag be placed directly into the urn, and that the urn threads be sealed with silicone caulking to ensure permanence and protect the ashes. Your funeral home or crematory can assist you with this. If you’re not burying the urn it’s your personal preference, there are no sealing requirements.
How are urns sealed?
Metal urns open and close with a threaded lid, and most can be permanently sealed with a clear adhesive, or metal-to-metal glue. Ceramic, stone and glass urns have a tight fitting lid that can be permanently sealed with a small amount of silicone sealant or clear-drying adhesive. Some wooden urns seal with a threaded lid, and can be permanently sealed with sealant or wood glue. Many wooden urns are sealed with a removable panel on the bottom which is secured by screws. Some stone or ceramic urns are sealed with a plug placed into the open hole. Scattering urns do not seal, but are made to be easily opened to disperse the cremated remains.
How do I attach an applique or military service emblem to a cremation urn?
If you urn comes with an applique, such as a military service emblem, it is designed to be attached to wood and metal urns by a 3M industrial-grade double-stick tape. Make sure that the surface area is clean, dry, and free of dust, then simply remove the layer of plastic from the back of the applique and affix it directly to the place on the urn you would like it to go. Once you place it, it will not be removable so be careful!
Cremation Jewelry
How to fill a cremation pendant/bead?
Please carefully read the description of the item you purchased. Some are opened by twisting a screw or ball located on the piece.
All cremation jewelry comes with a filling kit, using that and a small flat head screwdriver, first unscrew the small threaded screw located on the piece.
Insert a pinch of ashes into the pendant/bead using the spoon/toothpick/funnel provided.
Close the piece once more, sealing it with a glue or epoxy if desired.
If you are unable to close the piece, please look for a few things:
Make sure the screw can be inserted all the way into the piece. If not, this means there are too many ashes inside.
The screws/components are extremely small, please confirm the screw isn’t being inserted backwards.
Can I wear my cremation jewelry in the shower/pool?
We do not recommend showering or swimming with the jewelry.
